Guess the Plot

I’ve actually seen this fun tag over on the Books & Writing Amino, which is a great app that you can download to talk about books and writing with others! It’s been such a fun experience having a blog there as well, because there are so many people to interact with and being able to see different people’s posts is much easier than wordpress. So if you’re interested in that app, you can find it in the app store or google play store!

But back to this tag/blog meme. Basically what you do is you pick a few different book covers for books that you know nothing about, and then you try to guess the plot based on the cover! I’ll be choosing 3 different books today off of my Goodreads Want to Read shelf. Because they are on that shelf, I know that I was interested in reading them at some point, but I don’t remember what they are about. So without further ado, let’s see how this turns out!

The Dry Country by Judith Pratt

My guess:

If I remember correctly, this was a book I entered a giveaway for on Goodreads so it was added to my TBR list. From the cover, I think that this is about a place that is in a constant drought where it is hard to survive. Because there is a flaming bird, I also think that there are phoenixes that arise because of the drought and the heat. Possibly this is a dystopian novel?

Synopsis:

Dreams, visions, monsters, and a landscape that changes as you walk through it. That’s the Dry Country. No one crosses the Dry unchanged. If you don’t change, you don’t make it. For those desperate enough to cross the Dry in search of a better life, there are Guides, who can navigate the mirages and transformations that make the Dry so dangerous.

Miskin runs away from home to travel the Dry Country and become a Guide. But everything goes wrong. Samiya, the Guide, ignores Miskin. The other travelers think the Guide business is a scam and a swindle. The Dry reacts to their disbelief by separating the group and sending monsters. Setting off alone to find rescue, Miskin faces a choice between her new-found love and her calling as a Guide.

Thoughts:

Well, I was right about it being a desert type landscape, but that you can get from the title alone. The synopsis mentions nothing about phoenixes, but it does mention monsters, so it’s possible that they are in this novel. This sounds more like a mix of sci-fi and fantasy to me, but the synopsis seems to be a little vague to me. Now that I have reread this synopsis, I don’t think I’ll be keeping this on my TBR because I have far too many other books that I am more interested in reading.

Winterspell by Claire Legrand

My guess:

I put this on my TBR after reading and loving Furyborn by Claire, but I don’t actually know what this one is about. I think it involves a princess of a winter kingdom who has to flee for her life, possibly because of an uprising? Because she is holding a dagger, I think that she probably has to learn how to defend herself and is afraid of people coming after her. There is also a crow on the cover, which is maybe like an animal sidekick?

Synopsis:

New York City, 1899. Clara Stole, the mayor’s ever-proper daughter, leads a double life. Since her mother’s murder, she has secretly trained in self-defense with the mysterious Drosselmeyer.

Then, on Christmas Eve, disaster strikes.

Her home is destroyed, her father abducted—by beings distinctly not human. To find him, Clara journeys to the war-ravaged land of Cane. Her only companion is the dethroned prince Nicholas, bound by a wicked curse. Thoughts:

Oh this sounds so interesting, and no, I didn’t read the blurb at the top of the cover. I don’t think I’ve ever read a retelling of The Nutcracker before! I wasn’t too far off the mark, she does train in self defense and does has to survive, but she isn’t a princess who is on the run. Her friend however, is a prince on the run! I’m definitely looking forward to reading this one now!

Immortal Beloved

My guess:

This is one that at one point, the synopsis interested me enough that I actually bought and now own this book. The cover doesn’t give you much to go off of, but I think it may be a Fae novel based on the title. I think it’s also heavy on the romance aspect, but who knows? There is a girl on the cover as well, and I think it may follow her as she finds out that the guy she is interested isn’t actually human, you know, like most urban fantasy novels these days.

Synopsis:

Nastasya has spent the last century living as a spoiled, drugged-out party girl. She feels nothing and cares for no one. But when she witnesses her best friend, a Dark Immortal, torture a human, she realizes something’s got to change. She seeks refuge at a rehab for wayward immortals, where she meets the gorgeous, undeniably sexy Reyn, who seems inexplicably linked to her past.

Nastasya finally begins to deal with life, and even feels safe–until the night she learns that someone wants her dead.

Thoughts:

Alright, so I am probably right about the romance, but I was completely wrong about the main character! She’s an immortal being herself, but it doesn’t mention what kind of immortal being. Possibly Fae? Who knows, I may be going out on a limb here. It does sound interesting, just probably not something I would be picking up anytime soon.

This was actually so much harder than I thought it was going to be! I did have a lot of fun trying to guess what these books were about, and it just goes to show that you can’t really judge a books contents by its cover!
