Book Reviews and Recommendations
Once again, I bought way too many books this month, but I’m excited for them all and the majority of them were from Book Outlet, which means that they were really cheap so I didn’t spend as much money as it looks like I did. And of course, the majority of these are fantasy books because that’s my favorite genre! So let’s just get right into it.
Assassins. Do I need to know anything other than that? It looks like this one is about an assassin who has to choose between killing and protecting, which is something I don’t see often!
I don’t really know a ton about this book, but it’s got fairly good ratings on Goodreads and its a paranormal thriller with murder in it, so I figured I might as well see what it’s all about! And of course, I had to reach that free shipping on Book Outlet so…
I still want to read the Fionavar Tapestry by this author, but when I saw that there were a bunch of his other books on Book Outlet I thought this one looked pretty and interesting, so I added it to my cart! It’s inspired by Renaissance Europe and has pirates. From the synopsis it looks like it follows three different characters who all come together at some point, and I really enjoy books with multiple perspectives!
I picked this one up because of Chelsea from Chelseadollingreads on booktube. She read this for a readathon and was gushing about how great it is so I figured it sounded interesting so why not try it out! It sounds like it’s about a girl whose Aunt was kind of like a JK Rowling of this world, but dies before her series is finished, and the girl has to come to terms with a whole bunch of things in her life. Sorry, not the best description ever! I really need to work on my book descriptions.
I read the Immortals series when I was a kid and I read Tempests and Slaughter this year, so I’ve been really itching to read more from this world! I figured the best place to start is with the Beka Cooper series, starting with Terrier. All I know about this series is that it is set a couple hundred years before the Alana quartet, which itself is set before the Immortals series, so I’m taking it wayyyy back here!
I think this one is right on the edge between Middle Grade and YA, which is something that I don’t often read but this series sounded intriguing enough for me to try it out! It’s set in our world, but each of the continents are in different time periods. Our main character has to hunt her parents and uncle down through all of these time periods using maps because she is a cartologer, or at least one in training.
And then because it wouldn’t be like me if I didn’t do this, I also bought the second book in the Mapmakers Trilogy from Book Outlet! This is my biggest problem, when Book Outlet puts up multiple books from a series and I feel the need to buy them all.
Speaking of my problem buying series when they are all on sale, I almost bought all of the books in this series but I settled for the third book since I own the first two but I haven’t even read them yet. I’m being so on brand right now.
This is a Mongolian inspired fantasy story with two female main characters that fall in love. One is a infamous warrior and one is a divine warrior empress, and honestly, do you really need to know more than that to pick this book up? Probably not, so go check it out!
Gladiator meets Game of Thrones, where a royal woman becomes a skilled fighter to destroy her cousin who took the throne by force and killed her entire family. I am all about revenge and some stabby stabby action, so this is TOTALLY up my alley! This is one of the few books that I had preordered, unlike most of the books in this haul.
Yet another example of me picking up books in series I haven’t started yet! But in my defense, this one is self published and those don’t usually go on sale so I decided it was the perfect time to pick this up. Plus this author took major inspiration from Brandon Sanderson and Patrick Rothfuss, who I adore!
Surprise! Another second book in a series that, you guessed it! I haven’t started yet. This series sounds like it will be right up my alley though, with magic and dragons and this second book is described as Guardians of the Galaxy meets The Hobbit. Honestly, I don’t know why I haven’t started this one yet.
Piera over on youtube completely convinced me to read this book. It’s all about a woman who won a ton of wars, became Queen, and then gave it all up for a life of anonymity, then when a threat comes she has to decide if she wants to step back into the spotlight.
I am so mad at myself with this one, I 100% thought this was the first book in a series but it’s the third. But from what I can tell, this follows an girl in New York who isn’t who she seems to be. She is actually the goddess Artemis on the run for centuries from her family. It sounds so interesting and the synopsis for book 3 definitely sounds like it could be the synopsis of book 1, so maybe it woudn’t be so bad if I tried to read it as a standalone? If any one has read this series let me know if that’s possible!
I’m such a sucker for retellings and this one looks like its a retelling of Robin Hood, but with a female in the role of Robin Hood! I don’t really know more about it than that, but I don’t really need to know more than that!
This is the third and final book in the Chronicles of the Unhewn Throne series. I own books 1 and 2, so it just made sense for me to buy this one when I saw it on Book Outlet in the same edition for a great price! I’m not sure what happens in this book since it’s the third in the series, and to be honest, I don’t really know what the series is about in general other than it’s a fantasy about three siblings fighting for the throne.
It’s finally here and I finished it and I have a gush/review/thoughts post about this book if you want to read it! This was my most anticipated release of 2018 and it definitely lived up to my expectations!
I wasn’t planning on buying this book because I wasn’t as hyped for it as everyone else, but reviews have been great and I found a signed copy at Walmart while doing some grocery shopping, so I figured why not and put it in my cart! I don’t know anything about this book, but that may be the best way for me to go into it since some people have said its a little confusing to figure out what is going on at first.
And there are all the books I bought this October! Is there anything that caught your eye? Let me know down below!
A Dance of Cloaks sounds really good!
