Christmas Traditions
It’s getting closer and closer to Christmas, so today I wanted to talk about my family’s Christmas traditions and hear about yours! Maybe we do some of the same things!
The first thing my family does for the season is decorate. Like, all out, homemade decorations! We always wait until the 1st of December to start decorating, and then it takes anywhere from a week to a week and a half to finish it all! There are always new additions depending on our interests that year, and this year that addition is the Winterbago! It’s a play on words on the camper company Winnebago. Decorating in itself isn’t really a unique tradition, but ever since I was a kid, we’ve listen to the Sesame Street Christmas album while doing it!
Then we have our Christmas Eve traditions with the extended family! We usually go over to my Aunt and Uncles house with all the extended family (cousins, uncles, aunts, great uncles and aunts, etc) and have good food, games, singing, and of course, presents! Then we usually head to my grandparents house with my parents and brother to do a more laid back opening of gifts, then it’s home to wait for Santa!
Christmas day brings the tradition of my brother and I trading our gifts for each other in the morning before our parents wake up, although this one is a little harder to do now that I no longer live at home. Our parents would make us sit on our steps to wait while they turn on the lights and the music (and as kids the video camera!) But now we all jut head downstairs for coffee and breakfast before opening presents.
Lastly, we head back up to my grandparents on Christmas day for Christmas dinner with family and friends!

I love reading about what everyone does for Christmas! We have many traditions over at my house, we are very festive. We don’t have that many outdoor decorations though. We did go cut down our tree at the local tree farm. Typically we pet a yak and get free hot cocoa and cookies after… but the yak is gone. Pretty sure he’s dead, but I said that around kids so my dad said the yak “went to the farm.” One of my favorite things is doing a puzzle on Christmas Eve and playing games on Christmas Day. But I also LOVE the apple french toast bake my mom makes every year.

Omg petting a yak would be so cool! And the apple french toast bake sounds so delicious! We use to go cut down our tree, but it was just too much work for my parents on top of everything else lol

Okay so I have terrible news. We went to get the tree and……
THE YAK IS DEAD!
It “went to the farm”. MERRY FREAKING CHRISTMAS THERE WAS NO YAK TO PET!!!
There were goats though. I went “baaaa” at one of them and it went “baaa” back at me. We went back and forth for a while. But a goat is not as cool as a yak!!

Oh no!!! Goats are cool, but nowhere near as cool as a yak! Maybe they’ll get a replacement for next year?

POOR YAK! I was very upset. Well this is the second year it wasn’t there, but last year we went super late so I just thought he had left for the season, this year when we went I asked though… and got the bad news.

Oh wow, amazing decoration! In our neighbourhood nobody really does anything fancy. People who have a tree outside usually decorate with fairy lights but that’s about it 😀

That’s still pretty though! We’ve always gone a little overboard on our outside decorations lol

One of the saddest things about being in the diaspora, being so far from home, is missing the build up to Christmas day. The weather, the songs and decorations are all different – even the TV shows aren’t quite the same.

I love the look of your Winterbago! That’s such a fun idea and lovely decorated. We have a few Christmas Traditions ourselves, one of them being a trip to the pantomime.
