January 2019 Wrap Up
January was the month of graphic novels for me! I ended up reading 7 books, 3 of which were graphic novels. I had four 5 stars, two 4 stars, and one 3 star read, so overall it was a really great reading month! I’ll start with my lowest star read and work my way up to my favorite of the month!
Isola by Brendan Fletcher
This is a graphic novel I had seen floating around the interwebs and thought it was worth a shot! It’s about a cursed queen and her Captain of the Guard who will do anything to lift her curse, even if it means travelling to Isola, the land of the dead. Oh yeah, and her curse turned her into a Tiger. I had such high hopes for this one, but it just didn’t have quite what I was hoping. I’ve noticed some graphic novels don’t really explain to you what is going on, and that’s something that I need in order to enjoy the story fully.
City of Bones by Cassandra Clare
Technically this was a reread, but I didn’t really remember anything from the book so the details were all new to me. I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this book, since all my memories are more from the TV show than the book. I also particularly liked book Jace vs show Jace. I have a review of this on my blog, and one of my goals for 2019 is to read all of Cassandra Clares books!
The Female of the Species by Mindy Mcginnis
As much as I enjoyed this book, I didn’t quite feel like a 5 star fit, so my official rating is a 4 star. (I don’t usually use a rating on my blog, but I do on goodreads.) This was such a powerful story about sexual assault and I wish that younger me had read this! I talk a lot about the subject matter in my review, so if you are interested go check that out! Just a heads up: this book has trigger warnings for sexual assault, violence, and animal abuse.
Saga volumes 2 & 3 by Brian K Vaughan
Since these are two graphic novels in the same series, I’m grouping them together! Both were 5 star reads for me and I cannot wait to read the next few volumes! It’s a sci-fi graphic novel series following a couple whose relationship is….let’s just say people don’t want them together and will do anything to destroy them and their child. We follow them across the Galaxy in search of a place where they can be free to live their lives. If you aren’t sure where to start with graphic novels, I recommend these as they are easy to follow!
The Lies We Told by Camilla Way
I just wrote a review for this since it was the most recent book I finished, and let me tell you. This book kept me guessing from start to finish! There are two different timelines, one following Clara while looking for her missing boyfriend, and the other follows Beth and her disturbed daughter Hannah. Since this is a thriller, I don’t want to say much more than that. There were so many times I thought I had guessed the ending, but each time I was wrong!
Skyward by Brandon Sanderson
It should come as no surprise that Skyward was my favorite read for January! In true Sanderson style, the characters were complex, the plot was fast paced, and there was even a mystery thrown in! Again, I have a review for this one. But this follows Spensa whose dream is to be a pilot just like her father. The only problem is he was branded a coward for fleeing from a fight and was shot down by his friends. Spensa wants to prove she isn’t like her father while also proving he wasn’t a coward like everyone thought. The ending of this was so crazy, I have no idea how I’m going to wait for the next book!
Overall, it was a fantastic reading month! I read more than I usually do which was really nice. Have you read any of these books? What were your thoughts?

I feel like basically everybody but me has read Skyward this month. Really need to get on that 😅
