February 2019 Book Haul

I’ve been trying to limit my spending on books recently, but I think that I really failed with February. I had a few books that I had preordered since last year that came out this month, and there were a lot of books that I wanted to get and see if I liked them, plus I got my very first ARCs sent to me by a publisher WITHOUT me requesting them!

Throne of Glass, Crown of Midnight and Heir of Fire by Sarah J Maas

Yes, I technically already own these three books but they are in paperback and the rest of the series that I own is in hardcover, and I REALLY wanted to annotate the hardcovers. So I found some used copies in really good condition to replace my paperbacks! I don’t think I need to explain what this series is about since most bookish people have already either read it or at least has heard of it!

Leviathan Wakes, Caliban’s War, and Abaddon’s Gate by James S.A. Corey

Ever since I finished Skyward by Brandon Sanderson, I’ve been wanting to read more science fiction. I have heard a lot of good things about this series and it’s also been made into a TV show which tells me that it’s just as good as it sounds! I’m not 100% sure how to describe this series, but basically it follows two characters that live in space who are trying to solve a mystery and stop a war between Mars, Earth, and the Belt (asteroid belt). There is a lot going on with this series and I’m just over halfway through book one, but so far it’s been really fun!

Children of Time by Adrian Tchaikovsky

I have a fantasy book (The Tiger and the Wolf) by Tchaikovsky that I still need to read, and I don’t know many authors who write both fantasy and hard science fiction, which means that I am super curious about both genres from this author! I don’t know much about this book but I do know that it is a favorite of a lot of people and won the Arthur C Clarke award which tells me that if I want to read really good sci-fi, this is a good one to read!

A Big Ship at the Edge of the Universe & A Bad Deal for the Whole Galaxy by Alex White

Okay, so I may have gone a bit overboard with the amount of sci-fi that I picked up in February. This one though is a mix of fantasy and sci-fi and has been described as a mix of Firefly and Fast and Furious. This follows a treasure hunter and a racer who are on a race against time to find the greatest warship ever built that may or may not exist anymore. I could NOT stop thinking about how cool that premise sounded, so I gave in and picked up the first two books in the series. Plus, a bunch of people whose recommendations I trust have loved this book so I feel pretty confident that I will too!

Crown of Feathers by Nicki Pau Preto

Ever since I heard of this book I knew that I needed it, so it was one of my preorders for February! The tagline of this one is what pulled me in: “I had a sister once. I promised her the throne would not come between us. But it is a fact of life that one must kill or be killed. Rule or be ruled.” Uhhh hello?? That sounds like a lot of murder and intrigue, and if you know anything about me, that is something I LOVE in books! Plus it has phoenix riders and that sounds so freaking cool!

Ruin of Kings by Jen Lyons

This was yet another of my preorders, and to be honest I’ve heard mixed things about this since it’s release. I have heard comparisons to The Name of the Wind because the set up is the same: the main character is telling us his story after the events have passed. I loved The Name of the Wind so I feel like this could be one that I really love. This follows a young boy named Kihrin who was raised on tales of long lost prices and quests, but he never expects to be told that he is one of those long lost princes. Soon he learns that being a prince is nothing like the stories, and those stories are not always truthful. Sometimes the hero doesn’t always win, but maybe Kihrin isn’t destined to be a hero of the world. He’s destined to destroy it.

The Priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon

My final preorder for February! This is one of my MOST anticipated releases of 2019 and I am so over the moon excited that I finally have this in my hands! I’m about 300 pages in as of the time I’m writing this post, but I suspect I’ll be a lot further by the time this goes live. Everyone has been raving about this book so you probably already know a little bit about this book, but just in case, this is a multiple perspective adult fantasy that has dragons, a queendom without an heir, and fights against an ancient enemy. Right now my favorite character is Ead, but I cannot wait to see what happens next!

Mahimata by Rati Mehrotra

I won an ARC of this book in a Goodreads giveaway, which makes me really excited! I read and really enjoyed the first book in this series called Markswoman, so getting an ARC of the sequel was something I was not expecting. This continues to follow Kyra after the events of the first book. Kyra is the youngest Markswoman in the order of Kali which is a sisterhood of highly trained elite warriors tasked with keeping the peace and protecting the people in their world. Kyra is eventually forced to go on the run and finds herself surrounded by the Order of Khur, which is the only order that is all men. I’m really excited to see what happens with Kyra and Rustan in this next book!

Will Haunt You by Brian Kirk

I was lucky enough to receive an ARC of this book from Flame Tree Press and this honestly sounds like it will give me nightmares. The best way for me to explain this book is to give you a snippet of the synopsis: “By reading the book, you have volunteered to participate in the author’s deadly game, with every page drawing you closer to your own personalized nightmare. The real horror doesn’t begin until you reach the end. That’s when the evil comes for you.”

Junction by Daniel M Bensen

This is also an ARC that I received from Flame Tree Press, and what really drew me to this one is that it follows a Japanese nature host who goes through a portal to another world, where he has to lead an expedition back to their base. The only problem is that members of the expedition keep dying. But is it really alien lifeforms or is there a killer in their group? I actually have a degree in conservation biology so hearing that this has some biology interwoven in the story really intrigued me!

*This released on January 10th 2019*

What books did you get in February? Any that I got that you are excited for? Let’s chat!
