Book Reviews and Recommendations
I’ve always been the kind of person who likes to finish series or books if I’ve started them, but ever since I started blogging I have way more books than I have time to read so I’ve needed to be a little bit more picky with what I’m devoting my time to. So for today’s post, I wanted to talk about the books and series that I don’t think I will be continuing at this time. I’ve done a previous post listing the series I won’t continue with, so if you want even more of this go check them out!
One of my goals for 2019 was to read all of the books in the shadowhunter world so that I can finally read The Dark Artifices and The Infernal Devices, because I’ve heard good things about those two trilogies. However, that meant that I needed to read The Mortal Instruments first. I’ve previously read the first two books in that series and never had a desire to carry on then, and I definitely don’t now after rereading those first two books. Instead, I’m going to look up spoilers to save myself the time and effort of reading a series I don’t want to read to get to the ones I DO want to read.
Don’t get me wrong, I highly enjoyed Red Queen when I first read it. At this point though, I’ve completely forgotten what happens in the second and third books, so there really isn’t any point in reading the fourth and final book, ESPECIALLY when I have no desire to reread the series at this time to figure out what I’m missing. Maybe I’ll finish this series in the future, but somehow I doubt it because there are just too many other books I want to read.
I started reading this book back when it first came out and I just haven’t finished it yet. Did I mention that it released in February 2018?? That’s over a year that I’ve been trying (and failing) to read this book. I know that so many people have loved the ending, but if I’m struggling through the rest of the book will the ending make up for that? I don’t think so. This one has officially made it to my DNF list.
I really loved the first book when I read it as an ARC, but now that it’s been so long after reading it my….enthusiasm has dimmed quite a bit. It isn’t that I’m not interested in the story, because I am and I think finding out what happens would be nice, but I don’t think that I want to read the second (or third) books to find out. Maybe I just need to find someone to spoil all these books for me so I don’t need to commit the time to reading them?
I haven’t really heard much about this series after the first book came out, and even though I originally rated this book 4 stars I just don’t think I want to continue on. This one is just a case of I have too many other books to read and I don’t remember anything that happened in this book enough to continue. Which is a shame, because the covers of this series is beautiful!
Seriously don’t attack me on this one. I absolutely adored the first two books, and this isn’t a 100% I’ll-never-read-these-books-ever kind of thing. I do eventually want to finish this series, but if I’m being honest with myself, I don’t really believe that I ever will. I’ve been moving away from a lot of YA fantasy lately, and although I do still enjoy them, I want to read a lot more adult fantasy series like The Wheel of Time and looking at this series compared to those, this one just doesn’t seem as interesting anymore.
This one falls into the same category as Stalking Jack the Ripper- other series just look a lot more attractive to me at the moment. Also, I’m lucky that I remember that there is a character named Iseult because that is basically all that I remember. I know that a lot of people that I read and watch reviews of love this series, but I’m putting it on the back burner for now.
I read books one and two, and started book three but at that point I just lost interest. I didn’t really see the point of the second book and I believe that this series should’ve just been a standalone. I don’t know what happens in the last book, and to be honest, I don’t really care all that much. I’m fine just thinking about the first book as it’s own thing, and then I’ll just stick to the movies for the final two books (the second movie is coming out soon I think).
I almost feel dumb for even mentioning this series. This is a lot of people’s guilty pleasure series because it’s like a fantasy version of the Bachelor, and I’m also guilty of reading and really enjoying the first two books – back to back in one day. But just before I picked up the third book, I took a look at my shelves and found that I wanted to read other books more and spend my time elsewhere. That isn’t to say that I’m judging you for reading and loving this series (because I did originally as well!) but I just don’t feel the need to find out what happens, because I’m pretty sure I know already how it ends. It’s nothing if not predictable.
Jax, if you’re reading this I’M SO SORRY. Let me tell you a story. There once was a girl who was recommended a series because of her love of ACOTAR/TOG, and she read and loved the four books that were out. She cried at the ending and while she thought it was a good ending, she wanted to see the characters one last time. Then suddenly, 5 years after the series ended a fifth book was suddenly published! Hurray! The girl hopped on Amazon and ordered the book as soon as she found out, and then the 800 page book showed up in the mail and she realized that it’s been FAR TOO LONG since she finished the series to want to read a book that length. And so, the series has gone unfinished on her shelves, and would require a reread to remember what all happened. And ain’t nobody got time for that.
This one was just far too slow paced for me. It honestly felt like there was nothing happening for such a long book, and I even tried the audiobook and I was struggling with that as well. It feels like I was reading a completely different book from everyone else because this one has such a high rating on goodreads, but I can’t remember anything that happened! It was just far, FAR too long for a character focused book and with it being the first in a series there is no way that I’m going to be putting myself through all those books just to see if something actually happens. And this is supposed to be a feminist retelling of Authurian legends following a woman, but I might’ve missed all of those references in the 300+ pages that I read before giving up.
I totally understand The Selection one! I absolutely love the series, but tbh I don’t really have any interest in the last two books🙈
I haven’t even tried Cassandra Clare but maybe eventually? I love fantasy but the book series are just so long hahaha.
I read the first book of SJTR but I haven’t gotten around to the rest of series yet — I’m waiting for my buddy readers lol.
I loved your post💗

Thank you! A lot of YA series I find for me are just bad timing, I missed out on so many things as a teen that I could’ve been reading but now that I’m older I want to experience them, but I also don’t want to lol

I feel the difficulty of prioritizing other books over the ones still on your shelf, I have a lot of that lately! I did read The Selection, and while it was sort-of enjoying for me, I definitely knew the outcome of book three before I even started book one, and most of the things happening in those three books were just too.. much? I don’t know exactly, but I didn’t feel that much love towards them. I tried starting the fourth book as well, but 10 pages in, I realized it was gonna be the same story again, and DNF’ed it xD
As for spoilers, there’s a site called https://www.bookseriesrecaps.com/ and it has the recap for a lot of books if you forgot what happened, but it would also be really useful if you wanna know what happens in the books you mentioned without having to read the whole book!

Ugh yes thank you!! I was wondering if a site like that existed! That’s going to be so helpful!
I know a lot of people like the selection as kind of a guilty pleasure read, but it’s just too formulaic for me!

Glad to have helped! I use the site all the time hahah

The Seven Deaths I gave up on. I felt like I needed a road map to read that book. The others I haven’t attempted to read. It’s ok to give up. I only learned that recently.

There’s probably a few series I’ll never get round to finishing, but I’ve made an oath to myself that I’ll not DNF another book … quite frankly this year (and my current read) is really giving me cause to regret said oath …

I used to never DNF books until I started blogging and realized that I should focus more on the books I know I’ll love instead, especially since I know about so many more books now than I did 5 years ago!

The whole knowing about more books us what makes me want to DNF haha. Fortunately I can get through a bad book ALMOST as quick as a good book. Although, at times, it does feel like the literary version of self-harming 😭

That’s so true lol. I find that it could take me much longer to finish a book that I’m just not clicking with, and if I think it’s just something I need to read at a different time I won’t DNF it but if I can’t stand what I’m reading or dread picking it back up that’s when I DNF.

I also DNFed The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle, it sounded so interesting but when I actually started to read it I found it boring.

That was my problem! Everyone says the ending is great but there no way I can force myself through the whole book just to see what happens at the end.

OML I so struggled with the Selection and I am glad that I have found someone to relate to!
I’ve looked up recaps when I can’t reread a series – but I hope you enjoy the shadowhunter series that you want to read!
Stalking Jack the Ripper series seemed to drain the life out of the reader – I have to agree with you on not finishing it! lso, I hope you enjoy the Adult Fantasy novels that you read.

Thank you!! I think that I need to be a little more selective when it comes to YA fantasy because as I’m getting older I’m finding that there are a lot of them that just don’t click with me.

I wish I had given up on The Seven and a half Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle, the more I sit on that book that’s more I regret reading it

Every now and then I think about what the ending would be, but honestly I think I would rather have someone spoil it for me than go through and actually read it myself lol

The ending isn’t really that great so you aren’t missing much
