Book Reviews and Recommendations
November was a really good reading month for me, which I think it will be the last good reading month of the year because let me tell you – December is CRAZY so far! I was able to finish 5 books in November, one 5 star, three 4 star and one 3 star read which is pretty good! I think I’ll do this wrap up in the same format as my October Wrap Up, because I really liked that format!
A Curse So Dark and Lonely by Brigid Kemmerer – ★★★★☆
I still need to get around to writing a full review for this (and basically every book I’m wrapping up today) but I really enjoyed this book! This is definitely one of my favorite retellings that I’ve read lately and I’m really excited to see where this story goes! I loved Harper as a character, she was so incredible! I can’t say if the cerebral palsy rep is good or not, but I’ve seen other reviews that say it is so take that as you will.
Angel Mage by Garth Nix – ★★★☆☆
I loved the magic system in this world, but the first 80% really dragged for me which was unfortunate. It didn’t feel like there was a lot happening, and even getting to know the characters felt a little off as well because you didn’t REALLY get to know them all that well. The characters often rubbed me the wrong way and seemed more like caricatures of characters than real characters, which I guess may have been the point, but I didn’t really enjoy it all that much. I do have a full review of this on my blog, which at this point is amazing that I even wrote a full review for something!
Sword of Destiny by Andrzej Sapkowski – ★★★★☆
I think that I liked the first short story collection a little bit better, but the last two short stories in this collection were fantastic so I guess it all evens out! I love this world a whole lot, especially after being able to visualize it with the video games and being able to see the locations mentioned in both formats is an amazing experience. I’m hoping to at least finish the first book before I start the netflix series, but I don’t know if I’ll finish it in time since I think the show may be coming out in December.
The Sea of Monsters by Rick Riordan – ★★★★☆
I’ve been listening to this series on audio, which honestly is fantastic because the books are so short I can finish them in less than a day at 2x speed! I really enjoyed this installment in this series, and I love all the mythology that’s woven in – both well known and less well known! I loved Percy’s growth in this book, and his relationships with his friends is just so great! I’m sad I didn’t get to read these as a kid, but I’m glad I’m able to still enjoy them as an adult!
Shadow Frost by Coco Ma – ★★★★★
This was my favorite book that I read in November! It’s full of intrigue and betrayal, and love and friendship and was just fantastic! I’m so impressed and surprised that this was a debut, because it certainly didn’t read like one! This was so fast paced and I loved the magic system, and the main relationship was so fun to read about! This really gave me Throne of Glass vibes, which if you know anything about me then you know how much I love Throne of Glass, so obviously I loved this too!
