Book Reviews and Recommendations
Hi everyone! I feel like I’m in a reading slump right now, all I want to do is just watch TV and play video games instead of reading, and when I go to choose a book I’m just at a loss as to what I want to read! I’m going to try to power through, and there are a few books that I would REALLY like to read in November since we’re getting closer to the end of the year and I have a few books I want to finish before 2021!
The Shadow of What Was Lost by James Islington – I recently started reading this one because I’ve been wanting to read it for quite a long time, but I was intimidated by the size. It may seem a little counterintuitive, but I feel like a chunky adult fantasy is what I need to get me out of this slump. The synopsis of this is pretty vague and I’m having some trouble with the locations seeming to have multiple names, but so far I’m intrigued. It definitely seems like it’s a good versus evil, chosen one, quest type of fantasy which is my favorite.
Legendborn by Tracy Deonn – I’ve had my eye on this one for SOOOOO long and then it came in my October OwlCrate, so not only did I get a copy of a book I’m really excited for, but I got it as an exclusive, signed edition! This has been described as City of Bones meets King Arthur, with Black girl magic, and EVERYONE seems to be loving it!
The Doors of Eden by Adrian Tchaikovsky – After I finished Seven Devils and loved it, I decided that I really need to read more science fiction because it’s one of my favorite genres, I just don’t read enough of it! This one would fit perfectly in my 5 Books With Monster Hunters post, because this one is about two friends who were chasing monsters when one disappeared. Later on, the friend miraculously reappears but the circumstances around her reappearance are…a little shady. Throw in some parallel Earths where these monsters are coming from, and you’ve got a book that sounds like something I would really enjoy.
Beneath Cruel Fathoms by Anela Deen – I’m so grateful to have been sent a copy of this book by the author! It’s a fantasy with mermaids, forbidden romance, and some dark magic, which sounds so good! I always love a good fantasy romance, so I’ve got high hopes for this one. The ratings and reviews for this have been pretty positive, so I’m excited to see if I have a new self published book to recommend!
Star Daughter by Shveta Thakrar – This is yet another OwlCrate edition that I received, and I’ve also been wanting to read this one for a while. It’s been sitting on my bedside table since I got it because I keep meaning to read it, so I’m finally making myself actually follow through. This one is about a girl whose mother is a star and father is human. After she accidentally burns her father, she needs to ask her mother for help healing him but gets pulled into a competition to decide who rules the heavens next.
The Open House by Sam Carrington – This is one of the final ARCS I have for 2020, so of course I want to finish this one! The Open House is a mystery/thriller about a couple who is splitting up and selling their house, but when only 12 of the 13 people who attend an open house leave, the couple has more trouble than they expected. I’ve never read a book like this that takes place during the sale of a house, and I think it sounds really unique and fun!
The Open House is on my list to get to as well, it sounds really good so I’m excited for it, hope you enjoy it 😊

I know it seems really strange, but that’s what was calling to me the most! I saw a few reviews that really sold it to me as something that I need to read ASAP. I’m about 100 pages in and I’m very intrigued!
