Book Reviews and Recommendations
Hi everyone! It’s been a wild year, but we’re finally in the home stretch. I’m hoping to finish the year off with some good books! I have a few January ARCs that I want to read this month and a few others that I would like to read, but other than that I’ll just be choosing books based on my mood! I’ve already finished one book so far this month, but I won’t be adding it to this TBR list since I’ve already read it.
Across the Green Grass Fields by Seanan McGuire – This is the first of my January ARCs that I want to read and review this month ahead of it’s release! I’ve talked about this a few times already, but if you don’t know, this is the 6th book in the Wayward Children series, this time following a girl who visits the Hooflands – a portal world filled with magical equines like centaurs, kelpies and more! It’s every former horse girl’s dream, and I’m so lucky and excited that I have an ARC to read!
Lore by Alexandra Bracken – I have a chapter sampler that was given to me through NetGalley, so I plan on reading that as well this month. I wanted to include this in my TBR because even though it isn’t the full book, it is an ARC for an upcoming release. This one sounds really unique, with the Greek gods being forced to earth every 9 years only to be hunted by the descendants of ancient bloodlines. When a god is killed, the hunter who killed them becomes that god and the cycle continues. I’m really hoping that the chapter sampler pulls me in enough to get me to want to read the full book!
The Ruthless Lady’s Guide to Wizardry by C.M. Waggoner – My final January ARC! This one sounds so interesting as well, with a down on her luck thief who takes the job of a bodyguard for a rich woman, and ends up falling in love with another body guard. It’s marked as a historical fantasy romance, and it’s LGBT+ so I’m excited to see what it has in store! I do own Unnatural Magic by this same author, so I’m hoping I really like this one!
From Lukov With Love by Mariana Zapata – I’ve never read anything by this author before, but the premise absolutely sold me! One of my favorite YouTubers Riley Marie talked about this one in her Enemies to Lovers recommendations video, and it sounded almost exactly like Spinning Out on Netflix which was one of my favorite shows (until it got cancelled). I love a good ice skating movie or TV show, so I would think I would also love a book about it with a great romance!
Black Sun by Rebecca Roanhorse – I recently got the hardcover of this book (it’s STUNNING) and I really want to read it, so I’m thinking I might be able to get to it in December! This one is inspired by the Pre-Columbian Americas and while the synopsis is fairly vague, people have been raving about this one and I just want to kind of go into this one blind because I think that would be really fun to do with this one!
What books are you planning to finish 2020 with? I’d love to chat and get your opinions!
Ooo great post!! I love so many of the books on here, hope you do too! Here’s my review of how the king learned to hate stories 🙂 https://hundredsandthousandsofbooks.blog/2020/12/06/how-the-king-of-elfhame-learned-to-hate-stories-review-and-my-fav-art/

Thank you! I’m a little confused on the part of the sampler that I’ve read so far, but I’m hoping it clicks with me soon

As I read it became more and more clear. I thought maybe I just wasn’t focusing enough but perhaps there needs to be more world-building (explaining).

Yeah, I think that would probably help because I felt just a little lost at the start, which wouldn’t normally be an issue, but with a chapter sampler there isn’t that much to judge the book off of.

I read the chapter sampler for Lore too! I had some mixed feelings on it, but I am intrigued by the concept so I am looking forward to reading it. – Amber
