March 2021 Book Haul

Hi everyone! Today I’m sharing my March book haul! As always, I get most of my books either used or on sale. This month does have a few new releases, two of which I received in OwlCrate boxes. The majority of these books I got for my kindle, mainly because books are usually cheaper to get that way.

Title: The Gilded Ones
Author:
Namina Forna
Genre:
YA Fantasy
Format:
Hardcover
New/Used:
 New

I’m so excited that I got a copy of The Gilded Ones in my February OwlCrate box, which I received in early March! The exclusive cover is stunning, and the book is one that I’ve been wanting since I first heard about it! This is about a girl whose blood runs gold and goes to fight in an army of girls who like her, are nearly immortal. It sounds so interesting and I really hope I enjoy it!

Title: The Bright and the Pale
Author:
Jessica Rubinkowski
Genre:
YA Fantasy
Format:
Hardcover
New/Used:
 New

This is another book that I’ve had my eye on for a while, and normally I would get this as an ebook but because the cover was so pretty I decided to get a physical copy! This sounds like it will be pretty dark and emotional, and has a few trigger warnings listed in the synopsis such as death, work camps, discrimination, and childhood trauma. It’s about a girl whose village is frozen by dark magic, but she escapes and joins the Thieves Guild for protection. She then has to lead a group of thieves on an expedition to save her best friend who is being held against his will, but in doing so they run into the being that trapped her village in the first place.

Title: The Librarian
Author:
Christy Sloat
Genre:
Adult Fantasy Romance
Format:
Kindle
New/Used:
 Kindle Unlimited

I saw this one all over bookstagram a few weeks ago, and I thought the cover was interesting so I went onto Goodreads and read the synopsis which sounded interesting and not at all what I was thinking the book would be about! It’s a time travel romance, with half set in a library in 2017 and the other half in England in 1892. The catch is that she’s transported through time through a novel! I really loved Outlander, so I’m hoping that this will have the same feel. I got this one through my Kindle Unlimited subscription.

Title: Cast in Shadow
Author:
Michelle Sagara
Genre:
YA Fantasy Romance
Format:
Kindle
New/Used:
 On Sale

I found out about this book because of a list of upcoming releases, and this author had another book (I think either later in this series or a spinoff series) so I looked up book 1, thought it sounded interesting and when I looked at it on kindle I found that it was on sale so I thought why not? This one sounds like a fantasy romance with a bit of a murder mystery, with tons of paranormal creatures which isn’t something that I read a lot of nowadays, but I thought this one sounded interesting!

Title: The Light of the Midnight Stars
Author:
Rena Rossner
Genre:
Adult Historical Fantasy
Format:
Kindle
New/Used:
 Giveaway Winner

I won a Goodreads giveaway for a kindle copy of this book, and I’m really excited about it! I didn’t read the author’s other book The Sisters of the Winter Wood, but I do want to eventually read it. This one is also a combination of Jewish folkore, fantasy and history and follows the descendants of King Solomon who are blessed with his magic but after helping an outsider, they are accused of witchcraft and must flee and start a new life away from their magic.

Title: The Winter People
Author:
Jennifer McMahon
Genre:
Adult Horror Thriller
Format:
Kindle
New/Used:
 On Sale

Back around Halloween I was looking at different horror novels to add to my TBR, and this was one of them. It was recently one of the Kindle Daily Deals, so I jumped at the chance to add it to my collection so that I can read it! It has two timelines, one where a girl is found dead in a field behind her house and present day where a teen lives in the house with her family, and she needs to solve the mystery of what happened in the past before history repeats itself.

Title: The Devil Wears Black
Author:
L.J. Shen
Genre:
Adult Romance
Format:
Kindle
New/Used:
 New

It’s no secret that I’ve been really struggling with my reading lately, and romance seems to be the only thing that I can actually finish. I also love enemies to lovers, so it was a no brainer that I would buy this as soon as it released! I’ve already read it, and it was great! It follows Maddie and Chase who broke up, but now need to fake an engagement to fulfill his father’s last wish. There’s a lot of emotions here, and definitely some trigger warnings for cancer and loss of a parent so keep that in mind!

Title: The Devil in the White City
Author:
Erik Larson
Genre:
Nonfiction
Format:
Kindle
New/Used:
 On Sale

This might surprise some of you that I picked up a non-fiction because it’s not my usual genre. However, this one is a true crime non-fiction book, and if you know me then you know that I love true crime! This one is about H.H. Holmes who was a serial killer who pretended to be a doctor during the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair. I read the first maybe 5%, and it also mentions the Titanic sinking which happened in 1912, so I’m not sure how the two connect, but it has something to do with Holmes and Daniel H Burnham, who was the architect for the fair.

Title: Every Last Fear
Author:
Alex FInlay
Genre:
Adult, Mystery/Thriller
Format:
Kindle
New/Used:
 New

Okay, so this is one that I’ve had on my radar for a while and so many people have been saying that it’s fantastic, and even now that it’s been out in the world for a while I’m still seeing it everywhere so I gave in and got the e-book. I know very little about this book other than it’s about a family who gets murdered and a true crime documentary that’s made about it. I feel like this is one that will be better if I go into it a little bit blind, but I’m definitely excited!

Title: Dragon Mage
Author:
M.L. Spencer
Genre:
Adult Fantasy
Format:
Kindle
New/Used:
 On Sale

One of the BookTubers that I follow showed off this book in a book haul, and I was immediately intrigued because DRAGONS. Of course I can’t remember now who it was who hauled this. It looks like an older fantasy because of the cover, but it actually came out in 2020! It’s about a boy who doesn’t fit in, but unknown to him he has a rare gift that earns him a spot as a dragon rider. I’m very intrigued and it’s a really long book (almost 1,000 pages!) so I’m very excited to try it!

Title: Shards of Earth
Author:
Adrian Tchaikovsky
Genre:
Adult, Science Fiction, Fantasy
Format:
Kindle
New/Used:
 ARC

I was given an e-book ARC for this one, and I’m really excited about it! I’ve got a lot of Tchaikovsky’s books on my TBR, and they all sound fantastic. This one is a space opera that follow’s a man’s quest to save humanity after Earth was destroyed. I love space operas although I don’t get to read too many of them, so I’m really hoping I like this one!

Title: A Dark and Hollow Star
Author:
Ashley Shuttleworth
Genre:
YA Fantasy
Format:
Kindle
New/Used:
 On Sale

A fae story that is actually diverse? Yes please! Like a lot of the newer releases in this haul, I’ve had my eye on this one since before it’s release. It’s also probably pretty apparent that I get a lot of books from the kindle daily deals, which is where I got this one from as well. (Seriously, if you have a kindle, check the daily deals there may be something there one day that you’ve been looking for!) This book is an urban fantasy with a murder mystery and fae, so I’m kind of really excited to have a copy of this.

Title: Sweet & Bitter Magic
Author:
Adrienne Tooley
Genre:
YA Fantasy
Format:
Hardcover
New/Used:
 New

Sweet & Bitter Magic came in my March OwlCrate box! Again, I had my eye on this one as a 2021 release, so I’m excited to have an exclusive signed edition for my collection. This one is about a witch who is cursed to never love and a girl who has a rare magic who team up to catch the dark witch who created a plague. It’s also a romance between the two girls, and it sounds really sweet!

Title: Lost in the Never Woods
Author:
Aiden Thomas
Genre:
YA Fantasy, Retellings
Format:
Hardcover
New/Used:
 New

I had a preorder for this one because I loved Cemetery Boys so much! I’m excited to see what he does with a retelling of Peter Pan, and it sounds really interesting! I’ve heard good things about this one so far, and I’m really hoping that I love it just as much as I loved Cemetery Boys. I’m curious to see how the mystery of the disappearing children works out and how the Peter Pan aspect plays into this one.

Title: Firekeeper’s Daughter
Author:
Angeline Boulley
Genre:
YA Mystery
Format:
Hardcover
New/Used:
 New

Again, I’ve had this one on my radar and I actually saw it in my local Walmart while I was grocery shopping, so I immediately grabbed it! I’m really excited about this one because it’s a YA thriller about a Native teen who has to investigate a murder that she witnesses. I can’t wait to see where this story goes, and I’m excited to learn more about the Ojibwe community. I’ve also seen that this has been optioned for Netflix, so I definitely want to see what the hype is about!

What books did you get in March? Which of these do you think I should read first? I’d love to chat!
