End of the Year Book Tag

Hi everyone! It’s been a LONG time since I’ve done any sort of book tag, and this is one of those ones that’s really stuck around now that book tags aren’t as popular as they used to be. There are 6 questions about getting in some last books for the year, and since I haven’t actually looked at the questions in a while, I’m excited to see my own answers!

Are there any books you started this year that you need to finish?

There are ALWAYS books that I started throughout the year that I would love to finish before the year ends. Because I’m such a mood reader, I’ll often get around 20-30% into a book and then suddenly another book will catch my eye and I’ll switch books. Honestly, it’s amazing that I’m able to finish ANY books at all because of this bad habit! A few that come to mind right away are: Babel, Book of Night, King of Battle and Blood, Plain Bad Heroines, and House of Sky and Breath. I’m not officially DNFing any of these, I just couldn’t finish them at the time I started them because I just wasn’t in the mood for them! I’ve actually only had one official DNF this year, which was The Atlas Six. Sorry to all of the book-ternet for that one.

Do you have an autumnal book to transition into the end of the year?

Since I’m a little late with these questions, this isn’t really the best question since I’ve been reading autumnal feeling books for the last two months! I’ve read plenty of horror for spooky season, and I read mystery/thrillers throughout the year. I’ve also read some fantasy books that feel perfectly autumnal like Spells for Forgetting! I’m an autumn lover so if it could be year-round for me, I wouldn’t mind at all. I guess one that I still have planned to read that just feels like fall to me is The Shape of Darkness by Laura Purcell. The cover just keeps calling to me and there’s nothing better than a Gothic murder mystery in the fall!

Is there a new release you’re still waiting for?

There are actually some new releases I’m still waiting for! Normally at this point in the year, the majority of my top releases have already come out, but this year is a bit different. Heart of the Sun Warrior is the sequel to Daughter of the Moon Goddess and comes out on November 10th (or maybe 15th, Goodreads and Netgalley have two different dates listed). There is also an Anastasia retelling coming out in December by Sophie Lark titled Anastasia that I think sounds interesting. There aren’t usually many releases in fantasy in November and December, but early 2023 is LOADED with new releases I’m excited for!

What are three books you want to read before the end of the year?

Outside of the rest of my 2022 ARCs, I’m definitely aiming to finish a few specific books before the end of the year. I definitely want to read Theme Music by T Marie Vandelly which is a haunted house horror novel that I’ve been really interested in. Another one I want to fit in before 2023 is either The Way of Kings, or reread Mistborn so I can continue with that series because I’ve always thought of Brandon Sanderson as a favorite author, but I still haven’t read his biggest series! Finally, I would also love to read at least one more of my Illumicrate editions before the end of the year – The Book Eaters, The Whispering Dark, A River Enchanted, This Woven Kingdom, or A Marvellous Light. I’m always of the opinion that there are too many books to read and too little time!

Is there a book you think could still shock you and become your favorite book of the year?

I always think that a book could shock me and come out of nowhere, but at this point in time I don’t think there are any books that could become my #1 favorite for the year, solely because I’ve read SO MANY fantastic books this year and I can’t imagine how any book could come in and shock me so much that it moves past all of those to the top of the list. I think if that were to happen, it would be if I were to read any sequels between now and the end of the year, but I’m terrible lately with reading sequels. I feel like if it would be anyone, it would be John Gwynne or Brandon Sanderson who takes that top spot.

Have you already started making reading plans for 2023?

Absolutely! What kind of a book blogger/instagrammer would I be if I didn’t start planning? In fact, I started planning months ago, mainly because I am obsessed with tracking reading and making my bullet journal, so I’ve been prepping all of that since it’ll take a while! I’m already also working on my 2023 TBR lists for backlist books and 2023 releases, and those are some of my favorite posts to make!

Make sure you keep an eye out for my 2022 wrap up posts and my 2023 tbr lists! It’s always my favorite time of the year to talk about stats and goals!
