May 2021 TBR

Hi everyone! It’s the end of the month, which means it’s time again to talk about the books that I want to read next month! As you may know by now, I’m a mood reader but I still make a monthly TBR, mainly so I can see easily the books that I have to read next if I have ARCs, and also so I can list the books that I have a feeling I’ll be in the mood for. As a side note, I’ll be linking these books using StoryGraph instead of Goodreads, which I’ll be trying to do from now on! And if you haven’t checked out StoryGraph yet, you’re missing out!

Witches Steeped in Gold by Ciannon Smart – I’m so excited that I finally have a copy of this book in my hands! I’ve been keeping an eye on this one for a long time and I now have the stunning Owlcrate exclusive edition. This is a Jamaican inspired fantasy about two rival witches who have to enter an alliance to take down a common enemy. I love witches, revenge stories, and the reluctant allies trope, so I’m very excited to read this in May!

The Nature of Witches by Rachel Griffin – As I just mentioned, I love stories about witches and this is my ARC for June. This one really intrigues me, because in this world witches control the climate. Specifically, it follows a witch who has magic tied to the seasons and has to use her magic to restore balance in the world. I haven’t seen too many ratings yet, but I’m excited to see what I think about it! The tangling I also Practical Magic meets Twister, which just sounds so cool.

The Frozen Prince by Maxym M Martineau – I recently read and really enjoyed the first book in this series, Kingdom of Exiles, so much that I bought the second book immediately to read! It’s been a few weeks and I’m itching to see what happens next with Noc and Leena. I loved the Pokémon-esque beast tamers, and the assassins are all so interesting!

Empire of Sand by Tasha Suri – I’ve heard great things about this duology from so many people, so I figured it’s probably about time that I give it a shot since I’ve really been in the mood for some more fantasy romance. This one is a Mughal India-inspired fantasy about the daughter of an imperial governor and an outcast mother, who passed down the magic in her blood. She ends up right in the middle of the religious portion of the empire and has to use all her skills to resist them.

She Who Became the Sun by Shelley Parker-Chan – this is one of my ARCs for July that I want to get a head start on! It’s a queer retelling of Mulan meets The Song of Achilles, and honestly it sounds amazing. I’ve seen a lot of early praise for this book, and I’m really hoping that I love it that way I can get a physical copy to reread, especially since it’s the first book in a new series.

Sweet & Bitter Magic by Adrienne Tooley – This is one of the books I got in a recent OwlCrate, and it’s one that I’ve known about for quite a while that I really hope I enjoy. It’s a debut fantasy about a witch who was cursed to never love anyone and a girl in hiding who is a source, which is a person who is made of magic but unable to use it. They make a bargain with each other, and as this is labeled as LGBTQ+ I’m assuming that there is probably going to be a romance between the two of them.

What books do you want to read in May? I’d love to chat!
